Use a moisturizing conditioner with light essential oils. Oils like grapeseed oil are more easily absorbed by the hair than products like lanolin, which only weigh down and clog hair. Lightweight oils moisturize your hair and make it shiny, without weighing it down.
Avoid using products containing silicones and sulfates. Silicones are great for beautiful, smooth hair, but they can only be removed with sulfates, a harsh cleansing agent that dries out hair. If you don't remove them properly, your hair will build up and eventually look dull, greasy, and coarse. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to make your hair beautiful and silky without silicones, including nourishing masks and coconut oil. These products wash out easily without drying or damaging your hair.
Favor products containing
“organic” ingredients rather than products containing “natural” ingredients. Organic products are strictly regulated, from growing to harvesting. This means that ingredients like avocado, coconut, and shea were made without toxic chemicals, antibiotics, or pesticides that are harmful to humans and animals. These toxic chemicals can potentially damage your hair. The term “natural” is used very loosely by companies. An orange soda may be considered natural because it contains an orange flavoring that once shared a compound with a fruit. High frustose corn syrup is considered “natural,” as is petroleum jelly.
Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase to prevent frizz, breakage, and dryness. This will help your hair stay healthy and prevent breakage. Cotton pillowcases tend to snag hair and create small tears. They also tend to absorb moisture from the hair, which can make it even more frizzy and brittle. Satin or silk pillowcases are also excellent for your skin because they don't absorb moisture like cotton pillowcases do. If you can't find a satin or silk pillowcase, consider tying your hair up at night with a satin or silk scarf.
Apply a little oil to natural hair daily and to straightened/relaxed hair twice a week. If you look for products containing natural oils, such as almond, argan, coconut, and jojoba, you can use natural oils straight from the bottle. Avoid products with petrolatum, lanolin, and mineral oils. These will only dry out your hair and prevent moisture from penetrating. A little oil goes a long way. Start with a small amount and add more as needed. After washing, apply a moisturizing leave-in conditioner, then add your oil of choice. This will seal in the moisture and ensure your hair stays healthy.
Try a protein treatment. Protein will make your hair less brittle and less moisturized. Your hair will also be much shinier. Be careful not to overuse the protein, or it may break. You can use a store-bought treatment or try making a homemade hair mask.
Use a hot oil treatment twice a month to moisturize and soften your hair. Heat 120 to 240 ml of oil in a double boiler or in a jar filled with hot water. Section your hair and apply the oil using an applicator bottle. Massage it into your hair and scalp, then cover your hair with a shower cap for 30 minutes. After this time, wash your hair as usual with shampoo. Do not use a microwave to heat the oil, as it will lose its nutrients. If you don't have a shower cap, you can wrap your hair in a warm, damp towel. You can use the following oils: argan, avocado, castor, coconut, jojoba, olive, sesame, and sweet almond.
Trim your split ends as soon as possible. Even healthy hair can develop split ends, so check their condition regularly. The longer you leave it unattended, the more damage will spread up the hair shaft. Don't rely on "repair" serums, as these are only temporary fixes; they are not permanent and will not repair your split ends.
